INDIAN RAILWAY BUDGET 2008- LALU'S PEOPLE BUDGET AGAIN.


The Indian Railway Budget 2008-09 presented by the Minister of Railways Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav in Parliament on Tuesday once again turned out to be a people's budget. Following are some of the important highlights of the recently concluded Railway Budget.

- Second Class Sleeper Fares cut by 5%
- 1st AC Fares cut by 7%
- 2nd AC Fares cut by 4%
- 3rd AC Fares cut by 3%
- Freight Rates cut by 14%
- Smart Card based Ticketing system.
- High Level Platforms in 135 Railway Stations.
- Introduction of Modular Toilets in Trains.
- Touch Screens across all major Railway Stations.
- Electrification and Doubling of lines across the important routes.
- Modernisation of Rajdhani & Shatabdi Express Trains.
- 50% Concession for AIDS Patients.
- 50% Concession for Senior Citizen Women.
- Wagon Leasing Policy
- Introduction of Automatic Ticket Vending Machines in 6000 Stations across India.
- 10 new Garib Rath Trains and 53 New Trains to be introduced.
- No unmanned Level Crossings.
- Rail Link for Ennore Port.
- Free Season Ticket for Girls till Graduation.
- Multi-Level Sophisticated parking in 30-Railway stations.
